The company that invented VR visual testing, now trusted in 2,500+ clinics for more than 6 million eye exams, will add immersive, interactive IOL simulation—bringing testing, diagnostics and simulation onto one platform
Carrot (formerly Virtual Field), the most widely used VR testing and diagnostic platform in eye care, today announced an agreement to acquire GreenMan Vision, Inc., the company behind InSightVR. The deal will add intraocular lens (IOL) simulation for cataract surgery to the Carrot Platform and expand Carrot from vision diagnostics into vision simulation.
“For more than 40 years, patients have dreaded the visual field test,” said Jeremy Barlow, CEO of Carrot. “It’s long, tiring and hard to sit through, and it ties up rooms and staff. We asked ourselves a question: is this really the best we can do? Our answer was Carrot. We invented VR visual testing, created a category and changed eye care for good. GreenMan’s founders asked a question of their own: why should anyone choose how they’ll see for the rest of their life without experiencing it first? Their answer was InSightVR. Soon, both answers will live on the Carrot Platform. That’s what we exist to do: push what’s possible in eye care.”
Since 2018, Carrot has been the standard everyone else is measured against. More doctors, clinical teams and patients use Carrot than any other VR visual testing headset. That includes more than 2,500 clinics, from independent practices to enterprise networks. In those clinics, Carrot isn’t a headset in the corner. It’s how testing gets done. Patients get a faster, more comfortable exam. AI/ML derived analysis and automation save technicians and doctors significant time on every exam — time they can give back to patients. And practices become more profitable.
Carrot’s next platform evolution: vision simulation
Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the U.S., impacting millions of lives a year. At its center is a choice patients live with for life: which lens goes in their eye. Every option comes with tradeoffs, from glasses dependence to glare and halos. Yet most patients make that choice from a conversation and a brochure. They hear about their options. They never see them.
Cataract surgeons Michael Greenwood, MD, and Brandon Baartman, MD, of Vance Thompson Vision saw that gap in their own exam rooms and built InSightVR to close it. Using each patient’s own biometry, InSightVR puts patients inside everyday scenes — from reading to night driving — where they can compare how every major lens type could change their vision.
The evidence followed. In a 2026 retrospective study of 609 patients published in Patient Preference and Adherence, 57.1% of InSightVR patients chose an advanced-technology lens, compared with 28.4% with standard counseling. Seeing changes the decision. After surgery, 90% of surveyed patients who chose those lenses said their vision was similar to the simulation.
“We built InSightVR for our own patients, and we held it to one standard: it could never overpromise an outcome,” said Dr. Greenwood. Dr. Baartman added, “When patients can see the tradeoffs for themselves, the decision becomes theirs.”
“Our customers will keep the same InSightVR team and the hands-on training and support they rely on,” said Matt Larson, CEO of GreenMan. “What will change is scale. With Carrot, InSightVR will get in front of more surgeons and more patients than we could ever reach alone.”
Work smarter. Diagnose faster. Care better.
Carrot already serves both the ophthalmology practices where cataract surgery happens and the optometry practices that refer patients to them. Soon, those practices will get one partner from the first diagnostic exam to the lens a patient will see through for life. That will put Carrot inside one of the highest-value decisions in ophthalmology. That’s how Carrot grows: by inventing what eye care needs next and acquiring the best of what’s already proven.
“When we became Carrot, we said we’d be defined by what we enable, not just what we measure,” Barlow said. “For years, Carrot has shown doctors how their patients see. Soon, we’ll be able to show patients how they could see. That’s life-changing. The best decisions in eye care are the ones patients can see for themselves. That idea is the Carrot Platform. And we’re just getting started.”

- Creole Creamery ice cream bar: Sunday, Oct. 11, 2–5 p.m. CT
- Beignets and café au lait: Monday, Oct. 12, 9 a.m.–noon CT
InSightVR demonstrations are also available at the GreenMan InSightVR booth, #4142.

About Carrot
Carrot (formerly Virtual Field) is the most widely used VR testing and diagnostic platform in eye care. Founded in 2018 by an ophthalmologist and two engineers, Carrot invented virtual visual field testing and today supports more than 2,500 clinics with over 6 million eye exams performed. The Carrot Platform combines clinically validated testing, AI/ML-assisted visual field staging, workflow automation, bidirectional DICOM and EMR/EHR integration, practice analytics and, soon, IOL simulation, helping practices of every size deliver an exceptional eye exam experience. About GreenMan InSightVR
GreenMan Vision, Inc. is an ophthalmic technology company dedicated to helping cataract patients make confident, informed lens decisions. Founded by cataract surgeons Michael Greenwood, MD, and Brandon Baartman, MD, GreenMan created InSightVR, an IOL simulation that reimagined cataract patient education, creating an immersive patient experience. Using each patient’s own biometry, InSightVR shows how they could see with monofocal, toric, multifocal, extended-depth-of-focus and adjustable lenses, including monovision strategies, before surgery. It helps set realistic expectations and makes cataract consultations more productive. Learn more at carrot.io/insightVR.
