The company’s first satellite will test delivering solar energy from space to the ground with a kilowatt-class laser, a foundational step toward Cowboy's orbital data centers

Cowboy Space Corporation, the orbital infrastructure company founded by Robinhood co-founder Baiju Bhatt, today launched Reason-1, its first satellite, on a mission to demonstrate the first laser power beaming from orbit to Earth. Reason-1 will collect solar energy in space and transmit it to a ground receiver with a kilowatt-class laser, advancing technologies central to Cowboy Space’s planned orbital data centers.

"Every era of infrastructure, from the railroads to the power grid, has been built by those willing to push into new territory. The next one begins in orbit," said Baiju Bhatt, founder and CEO of Cowboy Space Corporation. "Reason-1 is our first stake in that future, and the first step toward powering humanity from the high frontier."

The mission will also provide the first in-orbit test of optical and thermal technologies central to Cowboy’s compute plans. Cowboy designed, built, and tested Reason-1’s laser systems, large-aperture optical telescope, and beam-steering architecture. The tools and design principles behind those systems will inform the optical communications network for its orbital data centers, while the mission’s power and thermal lessons will help the company operate server-grade GPUs in space.

Cowboy’s broader infrastructure plans span launch vehicles, power systems, optical communications, and compute. The company is developing a purpose-built rocket whose upper stage is designed to remain in orbit as a 1-megawatt data center. It is also collaborating with NVIDIA to deploy NVIDIA Space-1 Vera Rubin Modules in low Earth orbit.

Multi-year support from the Operational Energy Capability Improvement Fund (OECIF) enabled hiring of early personnel, procurement of custom components, and design effort leading to the development of the key enabling laser and optical payloads for the Reason-1 power beaming mission.

Reason-2, slated for launch in 2027, will build on that work. Sharing many of Reason-1’s optical components, it will demonstrate optical data transmission from space to Earth at near-record rates and carry forward the mission’s thermal and power lessons.

Cowboy Space will share updates as Reason-1 reaches each mission milestone. Follow along at www.cowboyspace.com, and on X and LinkedIn.
