Aloysius Ihezie and Ihezie Foundation Celebrates Prestigious Mayoral Recognition

UK Charity Ihezie Foundation is recognised by Lewisham Mayor for outstanding contribution to primary schools across Lewisham during COVID 19 lockdown.

MILTON KEYNES, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, ENGLAND / ACCESSWIRE / May 11, 2021 / Ihezie Foundation is a UK registered charity working to donate reading books to primary schools in the UK, and textbooks to schools, universities and libraries in Africa. Our book donations focus on literacy and academic development, ranging from primary and secondary schools to tertiary education.

Our aim is to increase literacy and numeracy and to enhance the educational experience of students. Repeated studies have shown that, in addition to improving lifelong education and learning opportunities, books provide very real support to children's mental health and overall wellbeing. With the ever-present shadow of COVID 19, there has never been a more important time to ensure that children have continued access to books.

Over the past year, against the background of an international Covid -19 pandemic, Ihezie Foundation launched its "Every London Child a Reader" initiative. Outlining this major new programme, Aloysius Ihezie, founder of the charity, explained that "as a result of school and library closures, COVID-19 has had dire consequences on children's learning". Responding to the crisis Ihezie Foundation has significantly expanded its support for schools in the UK and, in turn, the charity has recently been recognised by Damien Egan, the Mayor of the London Borough of Lewisham for its efforts in the local area.

Altogether more than 30,000 reading books have been donated to primary schools in Lewisham in addition to well over a million books to schools and colleges in Africa and elsewhere in the UK.

One particularly important aspect of the partnership with Lewisham schools has enabled the Borough to create more classroom libraries so that schools could continue to lend books to children despite the lockdown restrictions. Referring to the pandemic, Aloysius Ihezie explained that COVID-19 has had dire consequences on children's learning " with long term implications for the future of so many children". Welcoming the significant expansion of the book lending scheme, Aloysius Ihezie gave his warmest support for these increased opportunities for children who have missed out on their schooling or who, for health reasons, have had to self isolate during the course of the pandemic.

Ihezie Foundation and Aloysius Ihezie praised by local school teachers

In addition to the appreciation expressed by Mayor Damien Egan, other elected officials, including Councillor Caroline Kalu of Lewisham Council and local teachers, have been similarly quick to praise Ihezie Foundation's efforts.

"Thank you so much for all of the books that have been donated," says Nicola Doherty, headteacher of Lewisham-based St Joseph's Catholic Primary School. "This has made a huge difference to our school library," she adds.

The Mayor of Lewisham, Damien Egan said: "Reading for pleasure - whether you're delving into the past, roaming the galaxies, or getting lost in the stories of people across the world - is essential to developing the skills that make us successful.

I want to personally thank Ihezie Foundation-Book Relief for donating 30,000 books. This valuable and generous support to our community is greatly appreciated. These books will help our primary schools with their literacy programmes. They will encourage our young people to read for pleasure and will help inspire a love of books and reading."

Councillor Caroline Kalu said: "Years of government austerity have hit school budgets hard with the result that many schools simply can't provide the amount or variety of books that can help children gain the reading skills they need. I am very grateful to the generous donations from Ihezie Foundation and am delighted to be helping them with the distribution."

Lewisham's local mayor has since offered formally certified recognition to Ihezie Foundation and Aloysius Ihezie. "At Ihezie Foundation, we've been overwhelmed by the many expressions of gratitude for our efforts in supporting local schools including our latest contribution to the Borough of Lewisham and its schools," says charity founder Mr Ihezie.

"As a result of our efforts to donate these books and support local schools to promote reading and home learning, we were delighted to have been formally recognised by Mayor Damien Egan" added Aloysius Ihezie who expressed his hope that there would be further opportunities to support Lewisham schools in the future.
