Unisys Debuts SOA for ClearPath - Best-Practices Solution for Service Oriented Architecture

Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) today announced Unisys SOA for ClearPath, a new methodology, portfolio of services and suite of tools for enabling mainframe applications to participate in a service oriented architecture (SOA). This solution enables clients of Unisys ClearPath enterprise servers to rapidly transform their strategic applications. This helps them realize the business benefits of a SOA strategy while capitalizing on their investments in ClearPath applications.

With the SOA for ClearPath solution, Unisys works with clients to evaluate their application portfolio and help them make decisions about evolving their mainframe applications into SOA. This process is supported by reference models based on best practices. Tailored to reflect the clients specific requirements, those models help accelerate the transformation of their strategic applications.

SOA for ClearPath draws on the Unisys 3D Visible Enterprise (3D-VE) approach, which aligns strategic business goals and IT infrastructure. As applied in SOA for ClearPath, the Unisys 3D-VE approach gives clients visibility into the business processes and knowledge residing in their existing applications. This enables them to model their business and IT infrastructure to see the potential outcomes of various transformation approaches before they decide which one to employ.

Like all enterprise clients, Unisys ClearPath customers are increasingly challenged to derive additional value from existing business applications without putting at risk the revenue streams those applications drive, said Bill Maclean, vice president and general manager, ClearPath programs, Unisys. SOA for ClearPath enables our clients to transform their application infrastructure in a disciplined way, taking advantage of SOA opportunities while building on the business value inherent in their long-term strategic applications.

Using SOA for ClearPath, Unisys clients can choose from a range of best-practice options for preserving and extending their applications in a SOA environment whether simply streamlining the application on its original platform or wrapping existing application functions to make them available as business services.

This flexible approach yields multiple benefits. Clients can enhance their competitive position through SOA. They can accommodate new business goals and processes, and improve operational efficiency, by enabling existing and new applications to coexist. They can also reduce cost in application operations and maintenance, shifting future investment towards additional innovation.

Unisys has considerably accelerated the pace at which its clients can achieve the benefits of SOA, said Stephen Maysonave, chairman, president and CEO of Relativity Technologies Inc., a leading provider of enterprise application modernization solutions. As a Unisys partner, we have worked closely with many Unisys ClearPath clients using our Relativity Technologies Modernization Workbench. We have found that the new SOA for ClearPath offering builds upon the strong foundation of the Unisys 3D-VE approach, bringing added dimensions of efficiency and precision in preparing ClearPath applications to participate in an enterprise-wide SOA.

SOA for ClearPath also enables clients to capitalize on Unisys OS 2200 and MCP operating environments, including the new software and platform releases recently announced for ClearPath systems. Those expanded capabilities facilitate creation of SOA environments with transparent interoperability between existing and newly transformed application components.

Commissioned Research Study Further Spotlights Value of SOA

In conjunction with the announcement of SOA for ClearPath, Unisys has also released a commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting, Leveraging Legacy: The Fast Track to SOA. Based on interviews with 20 IT executives in North America and Europe, the report highlights how, using incremental development and delivery strategies and avoiding big bang investments, organizations can leverage their mainframe assets and achieve strong business value as they evolve from yesterdays architectures to tomorrows SOA-based foundation.

The study follows from Forresters discovery, in separate research, that 39 percent of North American and European enterprises are currently implementing SOA, with penetration expected to rise to 60 percent by the end of 2007. (Randy Heffner, Planned SOA Usage Grows Faster Than Actual SOA Usage, February 28, 2007.)
