Ascent Media Group Wins Contract with The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision to Digitize and Archive Dutch National Audiovisual Heritage

Ascent Media Group (Ascent), a leading provider of fully-integrated, end-to-end services for the global digital media supply chain, today announced that its London facility, Ascent 142, has been awarded a prestigious, four-year contract by the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision (Sound and Vision), one of the largest audiovisual archives in Europe. Ascent 142 has won a European Bid to implement a part of the Images for the Future project, which consists of restoring, preserving, digitizing, archiving and, eventually, disclosing to the public the Netherlands’ audiovisual memory.

Ascent 142 is in charge of searching, scanning to high-definition (HD), digitizing and archiving audiovisual (AV) files of 10,000 hrs of film material, mainly originating from Dutch public broadcasters. To that end, Ascent 142 is developing groundbreaking, extensible markup language (XML)-based digital archiving workflow solutions in collaboration with Sound and Vision, increasing both automation and quality control of the overall digitization and archiving process. Additionally, the company provides high-quality HD mastering services via its extended, feature-rich HD grading system.

“Audiovisual memory is truly a nation’s only link to its media history. We are extremely proud to be part of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision’s Images for the Future initiative,” said Paul Collard, vice president of Film & Digital Services of Ascent 142. “In order to guarantee long-term digital preservation and cost-efficient archiving, we provide cutting-edge technical solutions that eliminate the risk of technical obsolescence of any types of audiovisual assets.”

“With the imminent threat of decay and loss of films, documentaries, radio broadcasts and television programs, we need the best experts in the field to help us safeguard and realize maximum public accessibility to our national audiovisual heritage,” said Tom De Smet, film manager at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. “As one of the region’s largest and most complete providers of fully-integrated digital media content management and post production services, Ascent 142 was granted the contract resulting from the European tender.”

The Images for the Future project, which kicked off on July 1, 2007, is scheduled to be completed in 2014, when a total of 137,200 hours of video, 22,510 hours of film, 123,900 hours of audio and 2.9 million photographs will be digitized and accessible to the public.

The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision will take part in the international FIAT/IFTA conference (International Federation of Television Archives), October 15-18 in Dublin, Ireland.
