Departure of Directors or Certain Officers; Election of Directors; Appointment of Certain Officers; Compensatory Arrangements of Certain Officers.

On December 6, 2011, Mid-America Apartment Communities, Inc. (“MAA”) appointed Thomas L. Grimes, Jr. as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, effective immediately. Mr. Grimes, age 43, has been with MAA since 1994 and most recently served as Executive Vice President and Director of Property Management Operations.  MAA has not revised Mr. Grimes’ existing compensation arrangement in connection with his appointment.

A copy of the press release announcing the appointment is furnished as Exhibit 99.1 to this Current Report.

Effective March 31, 2012, the employment of James Andrew Taylor, Executive Vice President and Director of Asset Management, will terminate.
