Certified valuation analyst and author of Exit Right: From Ownership to Retirement draws on two decades of advisory experience to outline what privately held business owners should consider when planning a future sale.

-- Max Beairsto, President of EVCOR, certified valuation analyst, qualified business intermediary, and author of Exit Right: From Ownership to Retirement, has joined Xraised for a conversation on business exit planning and the considerations that privately held business owners typically face when preparing for a future sale or transition.

The episode, titled Exit Right, Exit Confidently, is available now on the Xraised platform.

A Career Built Across Every Side of the Transaction Table

Beairsto's path into transaction advisory is, by his own account, shaped by personal experience. He watched his grandfather's hardware store close without realising the full value of its goodwill and customer relationships. He saw his father sell his own business without professional support, with results he describes as sub-optimal. And he experienced the difference firsthand when, after struggling to sell his own business himself, he engaged a broker and the sale succeeded.

Those experiences informed a career that has taken him across multiple roles in business: as an owner, as a buyer at Katz Group responsible for acquisitions across Western Canada, and as an advisor guiding others through the valuation and sale process. That range of experience is what underpins Exit Right and the conversation with Xraised.

On the Importance of Early Planning

A central theme of the episode concerns timing. In Beairsto's view, business owners who wait until circumstances force the exit conversation, whether through burnout, illness, or an unsolicited offer, may find that many of their planning options have narrowed by that point.

Those options can include corporate restructuring, operational changes that reduce owner dependency, financial preparation that makes the business more legible to prospective buyers, and longer-term value-building work. Beairsto's position is that exit planning is most effective when it begins well before the owner feels ready to sell, creating conditions for decisions to be made from a position of choice rather than pressure.

What the Episode Covers

The conversation examines what a prepared exit can look like in practice, including how to build a business that is not operationally dependent on its founder, how to approach financial documentation ahead of a sale process, and how to think about the transition from a personal as well as a commercial perspective.

The episode is directed in particular at Canadian business owners in their forties, fifties, and sixties who are beginning to think about succession or sale.
