The product was launched to assist parents in protecting their children from germs by helping to ensure that they wash their hands for the entire duration recommended by the CDC.
On average, consumers come in contact with 300 surfaces every 30 minutes, resulting in exposure to 840,000 germs. Approximately 80 percent of common infections are spread by hands.
Regular handwashing is one of the most efficient ways to remove germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others. However, only 5% of people wash their hands correctly. “The problem with normal hand wash timers are that they require a separate interaction to set the timer” says Belinda Van Graan, the mom behind the development of Poppy Pig, “and most people, kids especially, just forget to set the timer. Poppy’s timer starts automatically when they take soap, so there is no way to forget to set the timer-unless you do not use soap”
Belinda also says that another problem with the current handwash timers in the market are that kids tend to set the timer (if they remember) and then open the tap and take soap. By the time they actually start washing 4-6 seconds have already passed, rendering the timer all but useless.
