Like nursery rhymes and old adages, rocking chairs are generational staples in almost every home. When yours starts to look a little shabby, don’t throw it out.

You can clean an old wood rocking chair and have it looking like new in no time.

Rocking back and forth is therapeutic. It relieves the mind of stress and triggers the release of endorphins in the brain. This release offers temporary relief of pain and tension in the body.

Rocking also helps to improve sleep. Continous swaying back and forth helps people fall into a deep sleep. It also helps consolidate memories while sleeping. That’s why babies love it so much.

Don’t get rid of that old rocker when it starts to age.

There are several things to know and do when it comes to cleaning a wood rocking chair. Check out these awesome tips to learn more.

Make Room Cleaning Your Wood Rocking Chair

Cleaning a rocking chair is like cleaning other pieces of furniture. You need room and space to do it.

Don’t mess up your carpet or flooring. Make room in a designated cleaning area and lay a tarp down. Make sure the tarp spreads wide enough to fit the entire chair standing up and laying down.

You also want to leave some sitting and standing room.

Gather Your Cleaning Supplies

This may seem like a simple step. That’s because it is. Depending on the product you’re using, you’ll likely need:

  • A bucket
  • Gloves
  • Two towels
  • Sponge
  • A scrub brush (maybe)
  • Oil Soap Cleaner

An oil-based soap cleaner protects the wood. Steer away from abrasive soaps that help liquid seep into the wood causing it to swell. Make sure you fill your bucket with warm water as well.

Start Washing

Put your gloves on and saturate your sponge with wash water from the bucket. Make sure it’s not too wet. You don’t want to start out with a mess.

Squeeze the excess out so it’s not dripping and start washing the rocking chair. Use short, even strokes. It’s okay to be a little heavy-handed. The firmness helps loosen tough dirt and stains.

Scrub every part of the chair, including the seat. You may have to turn the chair on its side to get the legs, slats, and back really good.

Get under the seat as well. Dirt and lint gather there because it’s not a spot on the chair where people think of dusting.

Repeat the washing process as many times as necessary to ensure you’ve cleaned it thoroughly. You may have to change the soapy water as needed.

Dry It Down

Grab your towel and dry the chair. You may need an additional towel, depending on how well you wet the chair.

It’s okay to use a fan after you towel it down. That helps gets the moisture out of the cracks and places the towel can’t reach.

Clean Your Rocker

A nice, clean, wood rocking chair ramps up the aesthetics in a room and does a body good. Don’t pawn yours off to get a new one. Clean it, and make it look brand new again.
