Even though this article discusses healthy eating and nutrition, it is really describing how the quality of food, eating habits, and diet contribute to your business success.  So if you are an entrepreneur, business owner, or busy professional this article is for you. In the United States today, the typical diet that most Americans consume daily is decidedly unhealthy.

The rest of the world has an appropriate nickname for it, the S.A.D. diet. The acronym stands for the Standard American Diet. The standard American diet is literally one of the most dangerous lifestyle choices that a person can make over the long term.

Let’s take a closer look at SAD

The obesity rate for adults in the U.S. (aged 15 and over) came in at a massive 38.2%. Which puts the cradle of the hamburger and the “Cronut” at the top of the fattest-nations-in-the-world rankings. I’m not taking this information from uninformed sources. It has been summarized from an updated survey by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development or OECD.

If you are not from the U.S., stop laughing because we have company! Running in second place is border neighbor Mexico, with 32.4% of the obese population, followed by New Zealand, Hungary, and Australia tied, with the U.K. coming in at No. 6. Judging by the multiple McDonald’s, I noticed on my last trip to France in Versailles’ vicinity. I’m giving the French an honorable mention as they catch up to the rest of us.

On the bright side, the slimmest nations are Japan, with a tiny 3.7% of the population tipping the scales, followed by India, Korea, Indonesia, and China. And across much of Europe, less than 20% of the population can be considered obese. This, according to the survey that was released in 2017. But some of these nations are not reading the memo and unfortunately are becoming more obese. Read further for a closer look at how we got this way.

Three Key Observations On Healthy Eating Vs. SAD
First

First of all, the S.A.D. diet is stuffed full of red meat and dairy products. Which are not anti healthy eating based only on what they are. They are absolutely stellar when it comes to clogging your arteries and causing hypertension in the body if over consumed. This wouldn’t be so bad if the red meat was grass-fed, but unfortunately, many of the cows ingested in North America is on a diet of growth hormones and various chemicals leaching into the meat. It is the source of significant problems in the human body. This contamination of the cows by carcinogenic chemicals keeps them growing at an accelerated rate and free from diseases that could spread among their kind.

Second

A second issue with the standard American diet is processed foods. Processed foods are everywhere in North America, and often considered a staple food for the daily diet. The problem is that these foods lack fiber, lack a full range of vitamins and minerals, and tend to be excessively high in saturated fats and sugars. Also, they contain a highly dangerous salt content.

Image

The standard American diet also includes foods that make it difficult to lose weight, mainly processed foods with high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup is a substance that should be avoided at all costs. It lingers in the body and makes it nearly impossible to maintain a proper weight range. Not only that, but it is, in essence, pure sugar, and it loads up the pounds like nothing else.

Third

If you want to partake in a standard American diet, there are some decent things that you can do. Eat fruits and vegetables with every meal. Don’t skip a meal that doesn’t have something green or another color of the natural food rainbow. If you love to have your meat, buy lean meat, and try to find grass-fed beef to consume.

Cut out white flour buns, look for whole wheat (and other grains) flour alternatives. Whole-wheat has dramatically more fiber and is much more beneficial for the body. Consume foods that are high in fiber. Since they help you feel full and digest meals better, they help you eliminate toxins from your body that cause health issues. Besides, fiber also facilitates weight loss. Without fiber in your diet, you gain fat much faster, and it can become a challenge to lose or reduce.

When possible, avoid the S.A.D. if possible, but if not, be sure that you are implementing changes that make it less unhealthy. You’ll be happy you did, if not now, then in the long run. A life not suffering from the same degenerative diseases that other people are who are living on the S.A.D. are dealing with.

Okay, now move on to implementing our new approach to eating.

Strategies For Healthy EatingCook a meal at home and travel with it.

Some of you may remember, as I do, taking lunch to school as a child. It is time to revive this habit as an adult. If you spend a lot of time on the road teaching, meeting clients, attending and speaking at conferences, it’s impossible to eat as healthy as you would like. Many years ago, this trend would continue even after I returned home from the road. It’s very easy to take the easy option of ordering fast food and eating at your desk. Also, if you managed to escape the office for lunch or dinner, restaurant eating offers variety.

Still, you need to scrutinize what goes into your body as food. Times have changed dramatically. Now I plan my meals and cook at home whenever possible. Not only is it healthier, but it also offers a much-needed break from thinking about business.

Cooking healthy is not too much work.

Thankfully, services such as Blue Apron have made it easy to cook healthy, delicious food. It becomes a more appealing activity without the chaos of shopping and selecting a recipe. Making it much easier to include cooking as a regular part of my routine.  Instead of eating out or order in at lunch, bring a nutritious meal to the office. You’ll still have time to unwind during your break, but you can do it with “nutrient-packed” superfoods, such as kale, rather than cheeseburgers and fries. When on break, stay away from the candy and soda. Bring healthy nonsugary snacks such as nuts and nutrition bars (check the sugar and fat!). Thirsty? Drink water or make some real tea.

I don’t know how to cook and don’t want to learn

Sounds great, but the cooking part is not working for you. Don’t worry. Below is a list of meal ordering choices that will definitely help you keep up healthy eating habits.

Eat Intelligently

Food is the first line of defense and the most potent disease fighter we have easy access to. It is the critical reason healthy eating is so important for our bodies.  High quality, nutrient-rich foods are the optimal fuel for our brains and bodies. They aid in the prevention and treatment of just about every chronic degenerative disease we usually see around us.

1. Hydrate. Sixty percent of your body weight and close to 90 percent of your brain is made up of water. In other words, water helps you concentrate, problem solve and maintain a good memory. As for your body, it keeps your muscles and joints functioning smoothly. Besides, it gives you an energy boost. A little Sluggish or drowsy in the afternoons? The solution may be to drink more water. Of course, a good night’s sleep doesn’t hurt either!

2. Improve your H=N/C ratio. Improve my what!? Never heard of this? You aren’t alone. This is your health = nutrients per calories consumed. You should be eating nutrient-dense foods while cutting back on calorie-dense foods. Our beloved muffins and bagels? No. They are nutrient-poor and calorie-dense. How about fish and vegetables? Yes. Nutrient-rich and the calories are of high quality. Know the formula.

3. Consume healthy proteins. Forget fad diets. It’s an excellent idea to eat protein at every meal. Toast and orange juice will lead straight to an energy crash. Why? Its a low-nutrient, high-carb breakfast. High protein foods can help you to maintain much better concentration and focus. Healthy proteins arrive in their most basic forms – not processed or battered. Try eggs, fish, chicken, pork, quinoa, or chickpeas.

CONCLUSION

Eat healthy as often possible. No surprise here! Healthy eating is one of the effortless ways to live a healthier life. Even small adjustments can make a huge difference. For example, not drinking soda and substituting it with water is one of the quickest ways to lower your sugar intake and lose weight. If you go away from some of your favorites such as cheeseburgers, hot wings, muffins, fries, etc. then fantastic! However, if you are a mere mortal like me, then you cheat! Treat yourself to the food you like once or twice a month.
