New Jersey Dentist Dr. Bruce Fine Describes Promising Treatment for Oral Mucositis

Dr. Bruce Fine says a specialized laser treatment provides relief for a cancer patient suffering from chemotherapy-related severe oral pain and lesions caused by oral mucositis.

WAYNE, N.J. - June 23, 2020 - (Newswire.com)

A long-time patient of New Jersey dentist Dr. Bruce Fine inquired about her mother, a cancer patient who was not able to eat and continue her chemotherapy due to severe mouth pain weight loss. “The patient came to my office reporting anorexia following her first chemotherapy treatment for liposarcoma, losing 16 lb in just a week due to her severe mouth pain,” says Dr. Fine. “Her oncologist was delaying and modifying her chemotherapy due to severe life-threatening weight loss caused by her inability to eat. Examination and diagnosis revealed oral mucositis with severe gum, mucosal and tongue inflammation, severe bone loss, very loose teeth and multiple painful aphthous lesions. Her oncologist had tried a standard treatment known as ‘Magic Mouthwash’ to eliminate the pain and allow her to eat, but it was ineffective. Magic Mouthwash numbs the mouth and as a side effect dulls the sense of taste, however, it wasn’t effective in her case.”

The patient's daughter, who has a Ph.D. in pharmacology, contacted several premier cancer hospitals around the country but could not find a solution other than the Magic Mouthwash.

“This was the first patient coming to me with oral mucositis, although I have performed laser therapies over the last 10 years for each of the individual symptoms she was experiencing,” says Dr. Fine. There is a small amount of NIH research showing the potential for laser therapy to successfully treat the problems associated with oral mucositis. We began laser treatment for this patient, and she was able to eat again in less than a week. We observed improvement of the inflammation and other symptoms. Five months later she is still able to eat, and oral mucositis has not interfered with her chemotherapy.”

Dr. Fine is conducting further study in laser treatment for oral mucositis in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapies. Patients who are interested in more information on laser treatment for oral mucositis may contact Dr. Bruce Fine’s office in Wayne, NJ at 973-475-8898.
